<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">Behind the herbal medicine share (CSM) of Lancaster Farmacy on Gypsy Hill Road in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, there is a founding family: the partnership of Elisabeth Weaver and Casey Spacht and their son. Eli is not easy to find because she moves at top notch speed from getting toys out of the Subaru Outback for Quehanna, and then may be out in the fields weed wacking, planting, packing, harvesting, or cheerfully presenting an herb class or tour.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">"You have to have the Zen about everything. It's not about structure," says Eli.</span><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"> "It's about balance."</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">Lancaster Farmacy has done several workshops since their beginning in 2009 in partnership with Youth Intervention Center and their shelter program to bring young people that are going through the shelter system out to the farm. "Herbs to Chill" was geared to teach about calming remedies for stress, chamomile, lavender and lemon balm. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">"They are very simple but useful herbs," says Eli simply.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">Like the CSM herbs she harvests, Eli naturally knows how to grow seeds of activism with creativity and vision. </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">She is balancing teaching people to appreciate medicine that can be grown in their own backyards while raising her son Quehanna.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">People come out once a month from a group she calls "Herbal Warriors." When they come out, they love it, because a lot of them come out here kind of shut down. I love it because by the time they leave they have flowers in their hair, and are tasting herbs." </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">Even though Lancaster Farmacy is a for-profit CSA and CSM, there is a lot of giving going on, giving to the community through tour programs, work-trade experiences and publicity. </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">"It's just kind of like a way we have to connect with our community." There is even a vision of some grants down the road.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">"Herbal Access Fund" was created to support work with "Herbal Warriors."</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">Underlying the work at Lancaster Farmacy is the awareness that people don't know how to plant and harvest a simple homegrown remedy to most minor ailments. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">"I feel it's really important to get this information to people who don't know about it, and teach them about how to help themselves in a very simple way," says Eli.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">For example, one visitor was living in the shelter, because of family situation, and after visits to the farm, he's interested in staying involved and learning how to make products -organic products. Nothing synthetic, or chemical-based is part of this CSM or CSA.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">As for getting the crops picked according to proper moon phase, "That would be nice!"</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">"But, when the call/order comes in," she says, "you have to pick what's fresh at that time."</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">Winter offers a time to focus on creating more products. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">"I want to do more tea blends," says Eli. "I think many people just buy tea from import and then they blend it," but Lancaster Farmacy is hands on from growing to harvesting ethically. At least that is the goal.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">Goals can change from year to year, based on the previous year, looking at wasted time and money. </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">As Eli says, "A farmer can make plans but there are so many things that can go wrong..."</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">"It's kind of amazing to me," says Eli, "how many people come and support what we are doing. This is so needed. And, ...we are just trying to bring back the old knowledge. There used to be a generation when you didn't have to go to the doctor right away. You would go see what your grandma would recommend first, and get some herbs from the backyard. I feel that works better."</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">However people often feel disconnected from nature, and that is why Lancaster Farmacy is offering tours and work-trade classes and Herbal Warrior sessions to the community.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium;">"We are trying to get people to re-connect to nature," she says. It seems an organic herb and food farm is less about making a profit and more about breaking the dependency people have on pharmaceuticals, often which have bad side effects. </span><span style="font-family: 'times new roman'; font-size: medium;">"I think anywhere you live, people should be growing the food...and herbal medicine," says Eli. That way, every community could be growing towards self-reliance.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"> </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"><u>Garlic</u> and <u>Calendula</u> are the two recent plants harvested by work-traders at Lancaster Farmacy acreage on Gypsy Hill Road- What do these plants have in common, other than they were ready to harvest July 7, 2016 when I showed up for my two hours of field and barn work. Both are ancient, both are edible, both are healing.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"> </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"><u>Garlic,</u> a tasty flavoring in sauces, delicious when roasted, is famous for keeping parsley in business. That is, to refresh the breath after consuming a lot of garlic, we all need parsley! (<em>And, salt and lemon juice will get the smell of garlic off your hands!)</em> Garlic reportedly can thin the blood, help heart health, bones, brain and the immune system. It is anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal according to sources on the internet and in books. It is most effective for medical conditions when taken raw. But, too high doses can interfere with blood clotting. In some medical conditions, it has actually been known to cause bleeding in the eyes. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;"></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;">When I arrived for my two hours, Kathe Shadd, Katlyn Doughtery and our tireless and energetic leader/founder Elisabeth Weaver had already picked the garlic from the fields. Elisabeth directed the operation of harvesting the many different types. With wheelbarrow in hand, we worked to keep the various types separate. Then back at the barn, we bunched the garlic in pairs using a cord to hang them up to dry in the barn.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;">We all remember the culinary uses of garlic and the recipes from grandmother's about garlic and vinegar and other concoctions, for example. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"><u>Calendula,</u> or marigold, on the other hand, was known to the ancient gypsies, has soothing qualities for the skin and eye. Calendula reportedly can soothe itching eyes de to air pollution or allergies. It has antiseptic qualities. It contains essential oils that made our fingers sticky while picking.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;">Bright golden and orange colors of "<span class="il">Mary</span>'s Gold" flowers (calendula) can make an artist want to paint, drink a cup of the tea, or have a stir fry made from the flower tops, rather than pick! The flowers can be made into tea useful for digestive conditions. They can be tossed into a stir fry and served in a food dish. Fresh is useful in teas and medicine from the marigold/calendula petals. But after picking, this batch would be dried in the drying room upstairs at the barn.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;">Later, when we washed our hands, we might have used a calendula cream, salve or gel, calendula to heal wounds, cuts, or scrapes. And, we might have a lip balm made of calendula, the soothing flower.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;">One thing we all needed was a cooling spray of water, as it was a hot day in the sun.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;">Sources for this writing have been a "stir-fry" of my own internet and old book searches in my library. As always, consult your doctor on both garlic and calendula uses, and be aware that this writing does not state that any of these anecdotal comments are scientifically verified, although some may be.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;">One thing is certain: the art of the calendula flowers are beautiful in colors ranging from yellow to gold to orange.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"><u>Calendula,</u> a flower of the gypsies in ancient times, was cheaper coloring than saffron, back then. Now it is at home painting the earth orange and gold in the fields at Lancaster Farmacy's organic farm. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"><u>Garlic</u>, a gangly bulb plant we all love for its burst of flavoring in spaghetti sauce, has edible and healing properties, is now strung up in the barn to dry.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, Times, serif; font-size: medium;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">These two contrasting harvest experiences were yet another educational and interesting time for learning about how this CSM (Community Supported Medicine) is working from the exciting fields of Lancaster Farmacy. Here, a "picture is worth a thousand words." </span><div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;">Herbs, like people, function best when the group has a common ground. <span class="il">Chamomile</span> is a good example. Each tiny flower can easily be disregarded as a flowering stem of a weed. In a group, it becomes a bed of white dots with yellow centers sprinkled atop a soft green bed of feathery ferns. It responsibly waves in a breeze on any hot day, sending its mildly aromatic scent up to the witness, or harvester. And, its flowers pop off by a handy rake device, and give up their sap of life. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">You don't have to know all the scientific names of the German <span class="il">Chamomile</span> such as "matricaria chamomilla" to enjoy a cup of the tea. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">The flowers are used in tea for stomach ulcers, fevers, stress, insomnia and even arthritis. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">Having such good credentials in the healing cupboard, there are people that might find that this member of the ragweed family brings out the allergies, and should be avoided. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">In addition, the teabags sold in most stores are reportedly not effective medicine, and have a softer, less strong flavor. For medicine, you will want local, wild, organic, fresher </span><span class="il">Chamomile</span><span style="font-size: medium;">, which is the kind that Lancaster Farmacy is growing and packaging for their customers of CSM (Community Supported Medicine). </span></span><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;">The internet has several sources that indicate that </span><span class="il" style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">chamomile</span><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;"> from Egypt may be than 10% organically grown and harvested under poor conditions. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;">Herbs like <span class="il">chamomile</span> often flourish in forgotten beds, Each tiny flower sits on a fernlike stem like a weed. Asparagus and rhubarb already has been picked, the watermelon crop is struggling, and wild nettles are in their glory.</span></div>

<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">Lancaster Farmacy, has as its goal connecting people to the healing power of herbs, as well as providing organic vegetables and fresh picked flowers, both for Community Supported Agriculture and to the wholesale trade. Business is growing!</span><br />

<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">The infusion of herbs into tea is a big draw for consumers and right now through October at the 5-acre rented farmland, volunteers and work-trade participants are getting to the work of planting, harvesting and packaging medicinal herbs. Learning about farming from seed to seedlings to cultivation and production, medicinal salves, earth skills and more is offered in a summer program by Casey Spacht and Elisabeth "Eli" Weaver.</span><br />

<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">These two experienced herbalists want to share their knowledge of organic medicinal herbs, flowers and produce and thus restore the native healing traditions. A member farm of Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative and founders of Community Supported Medicine, they have been teaching workshops and helping other farmers to grow healthy alternatives to sprayed, and genetically modified produce since 2009.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">"It's really about what' s fresh," said Eli picking the best leaves for an order for nettle to be picked up at the farm on a cool May 12 afternoon. Eli, the found and volunteer Sheryl Alvarez and Kathlynn Doughtery, work-trader, and Katie Landis who oversees work-trade operations---all worked side by side to gather nettles for the pickup a<span class="aBn" data-term="goog_130856585" style="border-bottom-color: rgb(204, 204, 204); border-bottom-style: dashed; border-bottom-width: 1px; position: relative; top: -2px; z-index: 0;" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ" style="position: relative; top: 2px; z-index: -1;">t 3:30</span></span>pm. <div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">According to famous herbalist, former USDA compiler of the world's largest data base of medicinal plants, Dr. James Duke, (85 and still growing at his farm in Maryland), nettle helps against hay fever and allergies when ingested in capsules better than a pharmaceutical. Dr. James Duke's "Sniffler's Soup" is made from Evening primrose leaves, stinging nettle, and diced onion added to any soup recipe. according to Dr. Duke's "ESSENTIAL HERBS, Page 104)</span><br />

<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">"There you go, I've wakened up all my circulation," said Eli, about the stinging that happens when the leaves touch your skin. But it only lasts a little while, maybe five minutes. Wearing long sleeves and gloves when picking is the best prevention if you are foraging in your back yard!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">In times past, people picked wild herbs that grew around them, but foraging for these plants is getting less and less possible, as there are less wild places that grow them. However, with renewed interest in medicine with no bad side effects, people may start cultivating these "weeds" for their medicinal uses. Stinging nettle, for example, is a known diuretic, astringent, treatment for anemia, gout, poor circulation, enlarged spleen, lungs discharge, internal bleeding diarrhea, dysentery and, in Germany has been used to treat prostate cancer. In Russia people are known to keep potted nettle on the kitchen window sill with an aloe plant next to it in the belief that an occasional sting is good for arthritis. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">It is important to note that the fresh plants sting, but the tea which uses the dried (and "Garbeled", sifted) leaves does not sting. (Peterson Feld Guide, Eastern/central MEDICINAL PLANTS by Stephen Foster/James Duke)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">Eli's favorite herbs for spring detox are nettle, chickweed, dandelion, burdock root, red clover. </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">Crops may change, fields will look different seasonally, and business needs will dictate some of the changes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">Eli said, "Obviously it changes from year to year. We ask ourselves if we like growing it, was it worth our time? Then, we either cut back on it, or grow more. Right now, it's the watermelons. We put a lot of time into them and we might not get anything out of them."</span></div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">Eli has come a long way from the talented artist without a care in the world as she once sat by the stream hearing the ripple of water and hearing the birds, watching for insects and an occasional rabbit. She learned from a library book she opened from the public library in Lancaster that it was dedicated by her paternal grandmother to her great-grandmother. Now Eli and Casey, and son Quehanna,4, are a family working towards making Lancaster Farmacy a success learning as they go.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>

</div>
<div align="left" style="clear: both; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: medium;">We will look forward to learning more about planting, growing and harvesting and marketing the organic herbs as medicine!</span></div>

that we have come this far. Thank you for everyone who supported us,
recommended us to your friends, been a CSM member, worked at our farm,
or just liked what we were doing on facebook and this blog! As many of
you know, we have been offering internships at our farm for the past 6
years as a way for people to get hands on learning about what we grow
and do. We are so thankful for all the incredible people we have met
through this experience. This year we decided to do something new which
is offer our 6 month course. It will be a way for people to go deep with
us one day a month and carry things they learn with them daily. We
realized that everyone is hungry to learn more and that is how<b>

<b>
Your Teachers:</b>
Elisabeth Weaver has been connecting with herbs since she was young exploring the land she grew up on. She has studied Western and Native Herbalism for over 15 years with teachers in New England, South America and Pennsylvania. Her passion of growing plants led her to herb farming at Goldthread Herb Apothecary Farm in MA, and she has been sharing her experience with others since.
Casey spent most of his childhood living in the woods and came to know plants out of survival and interest. His background as a naturalist and forager inspired him to learn more about medicinal plants. He has been a student of David Winston’s since 2011 and is continuing his masters in Herbal Studies. Casey shares his love for primitive earth skills everywhere he goes.

Everything is cyclical in nature. The acorn falls from the Oak. The acorn sprouts into a sapling. The sapling grows into a mature Oak. The Oak dies, falls, and feeds the entire system from it's decomposition. The acorns it dropped sprout into saplings. So it goes with every thing. In life there is death and in death, life.<br />
<br />
Earlier this week, Eli planted some ferns around the bases of the Elder trees to mimic their natural forest surroundings and help them thrive together. When we make the choice to dig, we know we will injure some thing. Whether it is an insect, a root, mycelium, or a worm, we are aware that our one small action affects a long list of organisms. In our effort to build the system we are in relationship with, we sometimes do harm. In this case, Eli's shovel injured an Earthworm- one of our dearest companions. We noticed it suffering, so she and Quehanna gently buried it's body back into the soil, along with a freshly planted fern.<br />

Who knows what will come of the worm? It may die and feed the soil from it's body or it may repair itself and go on serving the system through irrigation and decomposition. Either way, it remains a part of the cycle, the system from which it came. Our actions are simple, yet profound, and the lessons of life and death are no stranger to a three year old growing up on a farm.</div>

Yesterday I raked Chamomile. I walked slowly up and down one row of little white and yellow blossoms popping them into my bucket. The breeze and the sweet lullaby scent was everything I could have asked for on a summer afternoon. I spent the rest of my time at work dodging rain drops and photographing the magical wonderment of the flowers blooming in the fields. Each and every blossom proves to me over and over again that everything will be alright.<br />

A while back, Heidi (our main medicine maker) and Eli came to the realization that if we had a tincture press, we'd be able to produce not only more medicine, but more POTENT medicine than we have been by using only our hands.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let me explain: the process of making a tincture is quite simple. First, we harvest the herbs, dry them, and (in most cases) remove the stems. Next, we put them in a glass jar along with a menstruum, or solvent. Common menstruums we use are alcohol, vegetable glycerine, and vinegar. We let the solvent do it's work of drawing out the medicinal properties of the herbs for a few weeks or even months. Then we strain out the herbs and squeeeeeze them in a cheesecloth to get out the good stuff that is left lingering in the soaked herbs. We squeeze and squeeze and squeeze. We even take turns squeezing once one person's hands get tired of squeezing. Eventually, we call it. The liquid tincture is bottled, labeled, and sent out to our CSM members or sold at events. The spent herbs get composted, turning into the soil we'll use next year to grow more herbs and start all over again. BUT, we know there is much more very potent medicine deep within those spent herbs. And we'd LOVE to get that into the jars and ultimately into our bodies. The best way to do that is with a tincture press. These bad boys are made to exert 6 tons of pressure onto the herbs-FAR more than we'd been getting with our hands, in order to REALLY squeeze the juice out of them. </div>

So, we asked our good friend Eli Mailey (otherwise known as HEli) to help us out. HEli is a builder, fixer, and maker-extraordinaire. We knew he had experience with fabrication and would be able to help us build our very own press. And he did! HEli values locally-made goods as much as we do, so he contacted <a href="http://www.smuckerlaser.com/index.html" target="_blank">Smucker Laser Cutting</a>, <a href="http://www.rubinsteel.com/" target="_blank">Rubin Steel</a>, and <a href="http://www.therestaurantstore.com/141/store-profile.html" target="_blank">The Restaurant Store</a> -ALL Lancaster County companies, to source his materials. He custom designed and welded the press to meet our needs and even painted it purple!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Now we can be sure to extract ALL of the plants' goodness straight into the jars and into our bodies. Thanks to Eli Mailey and the local companies he worked with for making our medicine stronger and saving our hands!<br />

I LOVE Milky Oats! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I love sowing them in the Spring-
chanting and swaying and scattering their tiny hard bodies in the freshly
worked soil. I love harvesting them in the Summer- gathering their juicy little
cricket shells and sorting away the straw. I love making medicine with them in
the Autumn- soaking them in sweet sugary glycerite until they’re juuuust right.
Most of all, I love taking their medicine all year long- like the tin man’s oil
can to calm and soothe my frazzled mind. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I look around this crazy fast-paced world and I know we all
could use a little more Milky Oats (Avena Sativa or Avena Fatua)) in our lives. Here’s why:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
myelin rebuilder, nerve supporter</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Most of the nerve fibers in the body are covered with a
myelin sheath. Sort of like the rubber coating that insulates the current
running through electrical wires, the myelin sheath coats your nerves and
protects the electrical impulses that surge through them. When the myelin
sheath becomes weakened or damaged, the nerves cannot conduct electrical impulses
properly. So many things can cause the breakdown of the myelin sheath such as
stroke, inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, infection, certain drugs and
alcohol, and even stress. Demylinization can lead to permanent nerve damage.
This is especially a problem for people with Multiple Sclerosis. Their myelin
sheath breaks down over time, causing symptoms of MS like muscle weakness,
confusion, trouble with balance, etc. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Milky oats can help to restore and rebuild damaged myelin
sheath as well as to maintain healthy nerves. Loaded with minerals, this
nervine tonic is a blessing to all who are feeling depleted. They’re soothing
to the system, like a nice warm bath for your entire nervous system. Ahhh.
Milky oats, take me away! </div>

In the first few weeks here on our small farm, we've already harvested hundreds of pounds of spring herbs! Nettles, dandelion, dock, and spicebush have graced the drying room with the first scents of spring. We've spent countless hours hoeing, planting, mulching. The asparagus is growing so fast we can't keep up with it!<br />

But who is doing the most work?<br />
<br />
This weekend, we got two new honeybee hives delivered and moved them into their new homes- one of which was custom built, just for them, out of an old Oak. More than 3000 bees live and work together in each hive, constantly moving, always hard at work. This week, the new bees will be working to find their queen, establish ranks, and get acclimated to their new surroundings. Once they're familiar with the farm, they will join the rest of our hives in arguably the hardest work there is- pollinating.<br />

Then there are the plants- the reason we are all here. Eli pointed out this week that despite all of our sweat and sore muscles, it is really the plants that do the work on the farm. Started from tiny seeds just weeks ago, our green friends have grown in leaps and bounds, stretching and digging deep to root into the Earth that we've prepared for them. In the coming months, we'll see them reach their full potential as they blossom, bloom, and heal.<br />
<br />

We're all working hard out here on the farm.<br />
Humans, insects, plants, and more- together we make it happen.<br />
<br />
Now get back to work!<br />

<br />
At orientation, our first-year interns greeted each other for the first time and our returning folks were pumped to welcome new members to the farmily. Eli showed us safe practices for working together on a certified organic farm- it's serious business, folks! Together, we toured the farm, got a first look at the upgraded drying room (it's amazing), and enjoyed talking story. Casey taught us all about the bees, including the ins and outs of top bar hives. Many of us had never seen the inside of a hive before.<br />
<br />
In our first few days working as a new team we planted onions and shallots (also a first here), bagged up a big batch of mint tea for the Lancaster Farm Fresh CSA members and Unite For Her, organized, mulched the perennials, weeded and composted, harvested our first round of nettles and garlic mustard, and spent time getting to know one another. In our spare time we even rescued a baby squirrel and got a new farm truck.<br />
<br />
It will be great to be able to look back on this week of firsts at the end of the season and see how things have grown. Here's to a great growing season! See you on the farm.<br />

<br />
I was going through photos and came across this one which I love. I had to share it and give you some background. It is one job in itself to grow plants from seed to harvest but we don't end things there. We take it to the next level by taking the harvest and transforming it into incredibly fresh products like you see at our table. During the growing season we make sure to harvest 100's of pounds of fresh herbs so we can dry them in our drying house which later get processed into our special line of tea blends and bulk supplies. We infuse and macerate many of the herbs from the farm which become oils, salves, tinctures and tonics. Heidi Benard interned with us 2 years ago and brought loads of energy and vision to the farm. She got so hooked on medicine making she committed herself to being our products coordinator. She helps to manage literally hundreds of products we create and keeps me on track especially while I have 10 other pressing responsibilities overseeing the farm and of course keeping after my son Quehanna! It is such a pleasure working with this woman and she has tons of enthusiasm for any job no matter what size. This year she enrolled in Maia Tolls Sage School of Herbal Studies and we are excited for her new studies.<br />
<br />
We are gearing up for our upcoming growing season and you can sign up for a share of our products which runs over 6 months May-October. We are a member farm of Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative and they do an awesome job of getting our goods from the farm to your doorstep. www.lancasterfarmfresh.com. <span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: small;">It has been several seasons since I have blogged. And it seems that I can only really carve out this time in the quiet hours of night when everyone has gone to bed. I embrace winter. For all the months we are working our bodies, sweating, baking in the sun, reaping what we sow, winter is the exact opposite. We are right around the quarter holiday of Imbolic which means we are between winter solstice and spring equinox. Tradition was to make note of what things one would want to be seeding in the spring. It is also the time for cleaning out the old and bringing in new energy. I have been doing this almost instinctually and when I learned more about the holiday I realized maybe we are all more in sync with the rhythms of the earth than we give ourselves credit. We are relieved and happy to have placed all our seed orders. There is so much joy in the mail carrier delivering another package of seeds that our 2 year old son Quehanna excitingly picks up and carries to his mama with a big smile. There is so much in a packet of seeds. Life stored and waiting for the right conditions to grow. Even with all the planning we can do indoors, there is so much mystery that unfolds when things start to grow. </span></td></tr>

<span style="font-size: small;">If you are in the Lancaster, PA area, consider applying to our internship program which runs May through October. It was 8 years ago my hours from my community organizing job were cut back and I had the ability to get my hands in the dirt. I was burned out from the non profit world, crisis after crisis and wanted to learn how to heal myself and be a better help to those I wanted to provide for. It was the best decision I made. I interned at Goldthread Herb Farm in Conway, MA and started dreaming up my plan to move back to my hometown and start something similar. I hoped to start a community supported medicine program, teach people how to heal themselves with herbs and at the same time be a physical place for people to come and learn. I wanted to grow as many medicinal plants and life activated food as possible on a small scale. Today I am so thankful for seeing this dream come to fruition. I thank my partner, Casey for sharing this vision with me to start Lancaster Farmacy. We are going on our 5th growing season and have had the chance to work with amazing interns and volunteers every year. Our farm community continues to grow and become what we call the "farmily" Consider doing something different and giving yourself the chance to tune into a new rhythm. (Eli, farmer and co founder of Lancaster Farmacy)</span>Lancaster Farmacyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02107666738411085035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8534151688198321793.post-10561619284537297782013-09-10T20:19:00.000-07:002013-09-10T20:19:30.720-07:00Coming Full Circle: You Reap What You SowWe made medicine today. We talked and laughed. We put puzzles together and ate grapes. We garbled. We are farmers. This is what we do. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today I realized that I have no idea what farmers do in the Winter. It is nearing, after all. The Autumnal Equinox is less than two weeks away. </div>
<div>
So I asked Eli, "What do you DO in the winter??" She snickered. "Lots," she said. "Order seeds, plan for next year, build, repair, grow, make more medicine." </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It seems that when most people think about farmers, they can only imagine them working in their fields, sweating in the heat of long summer days; images of tractors and hoes may come to mind. It's like when you were a kid and you thought teachers only existed in the context of the classroom. Well, contrary to popular belief, farmers do much more than bust their butts in the blazing July afternoon. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Farming is a full time, all year round, nonstop, open 24/7-even on holidays kind of <strike>job</strike> life. It is packed full with schedules, plans, and deadlines. Mishaps occur, crops fail, and volunteers don't show up. All the while, there is work to be done and fun to be had. In February, seeds get started in the greenhouse. Soon new interns come to the farm, the <a href="http://lancasterfarmfresh.com/csa" target="_blank">CSA</a>/CSM orders start, weeds take over. We sow, harvest, and weed, weed, weed. There IS a lot of sweat involved. When September rolls around, there is still plenty going on at the farm. Today's medicine-making session was the second to last of the season and it feels just as busy as it did in the peak of the growing season. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It also continues to be joyful and fulfilling. Yes, we get a workout pushing tillers and building trellises, but we also get to play with babies, share lunch time every day, and put our love into our products. Oh, and there's nothing like the sense of purpose and fulfillment that comes from sowing seeds in the Spring, harvesting and making medicine from the plants in the Summer, and using their medicine to heal and protect your body throughout the year. </div>
<div>

</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Autumn is just around the corner and soon after that will come the brisk chill of Winter. Seeds will be ordered, plans will be made, and we'll continue to make medicine, laugh, talk, and eat lunch together. Ahhhhh, such is the sweet circle of life at the Farmacy.</div>

We took in their beauty, breathed in their goodness. We spoke about their healing properties and many medicinal benefits. I had heard of people using Elderberry syrup for colds and flu with much success, but was not sure where to find the berries or if they were native to our region. Thankfully, we've got some growing at the farm and plan to start making medicine with them this year.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">I left the farm in good spirits: high on a hard day's work and freshly dispensed plant knowledge. Later that evening, I was driving on a country road and spotted what appeared to be another Elder bush. I quickly turned back and collected a sample to identify. My idea was to come back later and collect the entire bush. I was pumped. Well, imagine my excitement when I turned into my driveway and noticed the very same plant growing right along the edge of our property! Confirmation came from several field guides and a quick internet <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambucus" target="_blank">search</a>; I've got my very own Elder bush growing at home. It must have been there all along, but I had not noticed it until then.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">I spent the next few days reveling in the joy that comes from knowing that the Earth will provide for you the things that you need and reveal them to you only when you are able to see. More research was done on the many uses of the plant- <a href="http://www.herbwisdom.com/herb-elderberry.html" target="_blank">medicinal</a>, <a href="http://www.care2.com/greenliving/elderberyy-crunch-bread.html" target="_blank">culinary</a>, and <a href="http://elderberrylife.com/history-folklore/hippocrates-called-the-tree-his-medicine-chest" target="_blank">other</a>. I pondered over whether to harvest the flowers now and use them in teas or wait until the berries show up later in the year. The decision was made to wait it out and collect as many berries as possible for use in medicine. I could hardly wait. My love affair with the Elder bush had begun.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Now is a good time to point out that the property I call home is not owned nor fully maintained by myself alone. In the hubbub of my daily life I failed to mention my newly formed friendship with the Elder bush to those who share in the responsibilities. Alas, my beloved bush was cut in half by an unknowing weed wacktress: devastation, then mourning. *Cue sad music.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Today I decided to do some more research- a coping mechanism of mine. In my searching I found these sparkling gems: </span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; color: #663300; font-family: Arial, Helvetica; font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: inherit; font-weight: bold;"><i><b>Death is a symbol of rebirth, transformation, change, and initiation. The sun is rising; a new day is being born. The blooms symbolize the rejuvenation that we will experience by shedding our old skin, our worn-out ways, for the rebirth of self.</b></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: inherit; font-weight: bold;"><i><b><br /></b></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: inherit; font-weight: bold;"><b>Death of the old is necessary for the new to emerge. The old is like the compost heap, full of rich experiences from which new forms emerge. </b></span></i></div>
<div style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;">
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: inherit; font-weight: bold;"><b>The elder is a very adaptable tree, quite able to regenerate itself in many ways. It can be rooted from a branch and re-grows limbs quickly, allowing it to recover from damage of both natural and unnatural assailants with equal ease. </b></span></i></div>
<div style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;">
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: inherit; font-weight: bold;"><b>I honor the energy of Elder, which sees the end from the beginning.</b></span></i></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: inherit;"><b><i></i></b></span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: inherit;"><i><b>Throughout many lifetimes I have been here.</b></i></span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;"><i><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span></b></i></span>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;"><i><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">I have the knowledge that I have changed myself again and again.</span></b></i></span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;"><i>
</i></span>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;"><i><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">I will start from where I am now, and continue to persist in my path.</span></b></i></span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;"><i>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: center;">
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">I will succeed.</span></b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: center;">
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">So mote it be.</span></b></div>
<div style="font-weight: bold; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</i></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: inherit;">Ah ha! I had believed my lesson to be that of opening myself up to receive and being fulfilled. While that did happen and I do feel provided for, I know now that I (and you) can learn so much more from this. Here's a sample: </span><br />
<ul>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Spending time at the farm leads to awesome things.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Talking to Eli about what is growing on the farm is invaluable time spent. </span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">The Elder bush is a veritable medicine chest AND makes tasty food. </span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Opening up to what the Earth provides allows for abundance, healing, and growth.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><a href="http://www.thegoddesstree.com/trees/Elder/htm" target="_blank">The goddess tree</a> is a website I really enjoy. Thanks for the gems! </span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Talk to the people you share responsibilities with about the things that are sacred to you so they do not unwittingly destroy them. </span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Shit happens; it all works out anyway. Bushes get cut down and they grow back, especially the Elder bush. We recover. </span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">With Love,</span><br />
