Medicine
Scanning the moist forest floor I look with eyes that are my
own yet connected with so many. In the forest all life is staring, waiting,
welcoming… A life we once knew and a future that is all but a memory, an awakening.
I search for Morchella, Morel, the sponge mushroom, or something deeper? My
hope is to find them or better yet for them to allow me to see them. I search for
the morels. They draw me here to this wilderness, but that is not what keeps me
here or what keeps me coming back. A turkey starts clucking as I near her
hiding place….then whoosh, flutter, she is maneuvering out of sight around the
trees and into the valley. Sensing a movement behind me I slowly turn my head
to see a red fox scamper ever so slightly across a fallen sycamore tree, off she
hops, and fades into the lush green hues of trillium and blue cohosh. I move on
and look up to see the towering tulip trees above me. The small bright green
cat faced leaves translucent-like, capturing as much sunlight as possible. My
head is clear, my thoughts are clearer, I feel as if I have been here before…I
have. In dreams, in thoughts, and in spirit. This awareness is my panacea; I
absorb it and open myself to this connection of listening to all of my senses
and feeling all around me. Crossing a crystal clear stream and gazing through
the spicebush branches I notice a misshapen figure coming up out of the leaves,
it doesn’t match anything yet blends in perfectly. I stop, look around, and
count them…1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,etc….This is my healing.
